INFORMED CONSENT FORM

1. This section provides an explanation of the study in which you will be participating:

This research study is being conducted by Dr. Kyungmi Kim in the Psychology Department at Wesleyan University.  The focus of this study is on cognitive processes involved in perception and thinking.  You will be informed further about the purpose of this study at the conclusion of your participation.  The risks associated with participating in this study are no greater than those you would encounter in everyday life.

During the study, you will see words and make various judgments about them.  Depending on the condition to which you are assigned, your participation will take place either in a single session or across two sessions scheduled on separate days (either 1 day or 1 week apart).  If a second session is required, it will be scheduled at the beginning of the study.  Total participation time will be approximately 40 minutes.

2. This section describes your rights as a research participant:

In return for your participation, you will receive 1 hour credit toward the Research Participation requirement in Psychology 105.  Your participation is voluntary and you may change your mind and terminate the study at any time without loss of benefits.

Your participation in this research is confidential.  All data collected will be kept strictly confidential, and your responses will be identified only by a code number.  Only Dr. Kim will initially have access to the raw study data.  De-identified data will be shared with current members of Dr. Kim’s lab for data analysis.  De-identified data may also be shared in a public data repository when a manuscript related to this study is submitted for publication and after publication.

3. This section indicates that you are giving your informed consent to participate in research.

I am at least 18 years of age.  I understand the information provided to me and have received answers to my questions about the research procedures.  I understand and agree to the conditions of this study as described.  I understand that I will receive 1 hour credit toward the Research Participation requirement in Psychology 105 and that I am entitled to no other compensation.  I understand that my participation is voluntary and that I may withdraw from this study at any time without loss of benefits by notifying the person in charge.
